Job Description

In this work from home position, you will work on a multifunctional team underwriting workers’ compensation policies.  You will analyze exposures and select the most profitable business possible that is consistent with company's best practices, while making underwriting decisions regarding coverage.  Providing excellent customer service to our customers and the ability to build and sustain relationships is key in this role.

What You Will Be Doing  

  • Analyzes exposures and make underwriting decisions regarding continuation of coverage, pricing and the service needs of our customers and within authority level.
  • Evaluates and analyzes new business applications for relevant information and determines appropriate action to be taken. Selects the most profitable business possible, consistent with company best practices as well as team and company goals and objectives, within individual authority level. Monitors new business activity.
  • Maintains and monitors entire underwriting book of business to achieve premium volume and loss ratios consistent with company goals and objectives.
  • If needed, meets with agencies to review and strengthen business relationships and communicate company philosophy, procedures, service capabilities and new products or changes in products.
  • Works with other underwriters, as needed, to participate in team meetings to educate and promote SFM’s service capabilities to agencies as needed. Maintains appropriate interactions with internal and external customers.
  • Provides premier customer service to all customers and complies with customer service standards. Responds promptly to resolve complaints or problems.  Adheres to business service-level agreements represented by various strategic business unit teams.
  • Reviews and quotes applications from new and renewal customers and for changes in policies and in preparing information for the respective policy or change endorsements.
  • Accepts, declines or modifies applications or requests to sell an insurance policy. Applies business unit policies, practices and procedures.
  • Regularly interacts with team members, policyholders, agents, premium audit, and technical specialists to achieve individual and team goals. Maintains appropriate interactions with internal and external customers.
  • Identifies and communicates trending and underwriting practices that could impact the team’s book of business.
  • Demonstrates an understanding and willingness to learn the various basic fundamentals of insurance finance.

What We'll Love About You

  • Bachelor’s degree in insurance, finance, risk management, business or related field; in lieu of a bachelor’s degree, an equivalent combination of education and/or relevant work experience will be accepted.
  • Six months, or more, of underwriting (workers’ compensation and/or casualty) experience, or other relevant experience.  Agency experience is a plus. 
  • Professional insurance designations (CPCU, ARM) a plus.
  • Knowledge of state applicable Workers’ Compensation rules and regulations, NCCI rules and its application to underwriting, preferred. 
  • Understanding of insurance finance.
  • Ability to evaluate accounts for acceptability and insurability.
  • Strong verbal and written oral communication skills.
  • Must be detailed oriented.
  • Ability to interact in a team environment and to collaborate with other business units and a diverse group of customers.
  • Ability to assimilate, understand and analyze information from a variety of sources.
  • Strong math skills.
  • Good problem-solving and decision-making skills.
  • Effective prioritization, organization and time management skills.
  • Strong customer service and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficient in MS Office software applications (Excel, Word, etc.).

Physical Requirements 

  Remote work. Regular attendance is required. Work takes place in a semi paperless environment within an office/home office setting, using standard office equipment such as computers, phones, and photocopiers, which requires being stationary for extended periods of time. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk or hear, and maintain concentration and focus. The employee frequently is required to stand; walk; use hands and fingers, handle or feel; and reach with hands and arms and work with close vision. This position requires the ability to occasionally lift office products and supplies, up to 20 pounds. Work is performed indoors with little to no exposure to extreme outdoor weather conditions. Travel as needed.
