The Sabbath Counselor works over the Sabbath period (Friday afternoon through Saturday night) and on Jewish Holidays. The Sabbath Counselor is responsible for providing a spiritual environment and culturally sensitive services for the individuals in the division.

Purpose:

The Mishkon Division provides supports and services in a healthy and safe environment for individuals with intellectual/developmental disabilities living in residential programs and in community settings. Our core values are to provide a healthy and safe environment that promotes person-centered planning, community integration, and close collaboration with families and the community. This is all accomplished through an Orthodox Jewish lens, and with an understanding that staff, at all levels of the division, is the determining factor in achieving positive outcomes for our clients.

POSITION OVERVIEW:

The Sabbath Counselor works over the Sabbath period (Friday afternoon through Saturday night) and on Jewish Holidays. The Sabbath Counselor is responsible for providing a spiritual environment and culturally sensitive services for the individuals in the division.

KEY ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  1. Conducts religious services with the individual(s) in the synagogue environment.
  2. Ensure that clients attending services wear appropriate religious attire.
  3. Says the appropriate blessings (with the individual(s), required for consumption of specific food items.
  4. Sings Sabbath and Holiday appropriate songs with the individual(s).
  5. May go on walks over the Sabbath or holiday where appropriate.
  6. Conducts a Sabbath party/ceremony on Saturday or holiday afternoon with refreshments and singing.
  7. Oversees the food service delivery on Friday evening and Saturday morning/afternoon as well as holiday to ensure proper kosher standards are kept at all times.
  8. Required to dress in appropriate Sabbath and Jewish Holiday attire.

EDUCATIONAL / TRAINING REQUIRED:

Must be at least 18 years old, no educational requirements, must have knowledge of Orthodox Jewish laws, traditions, and practices.

EXPERIENCE REQUIRED / LANGUAGE PREFERENCE:

Experience working with individuals with Intellectual Disabilities preferred.

COMPUTER SKILLS REQUIRED:

Basic computer skills required (Microsoft Word, Outlook, and Excel).

WORK ENVIRONMENT / PHYSICAL EFFORT:

The position entails some lifting and moving related to food service. Pushing a wheelchair and walking clients from one residence to another.
