Telework Information: This position is eligible for hybrid work schedule, with up to two days of remote work and three days or more onsite, per week.


The CalPERS Investigation Unit within the Legal Office is currently seeking an Investigator as the Investigation Unit is responsable for performing internal and external investigations of allegations of wrongdoing, violations of CalPERS or State of California policy and/or criminal activity to promote consitent organizational behavior.


Duties include but are not limited to:

  • Conducts complex and seniative disability retirement investigations which includes conducting surveillance and utilizing electronic equipment.
  • Conducts complex and sensitive internal investigations of employee misconduct.
  • Investigators are expected to work undercover and testify in criminal and administrative proceedings.
  • Work hours will include: working long and unusual hours and traveling throughout the State of California.
  • Investigators will locate and interview witnesses, review complex medical reports, obtain evidence, serve subpoenas and prepare written detailed reports.
  • Work as a liason with state and local law enforcement in coordination of disability cases and fraud investigations.

  • Describe your organizational style with respect to your workload. How do you ensure all assignments are completed promptly and by priority?
Minimum Qualifications

Citizenship Requirement: Pursuant to Government Code Section 1031(a), in order to be a peace officer, a person must either be a U.S. Citizen or be a permanent resident alien who is eligible for and has applied for U.S. Citizenship. Any permanent resident alien who is employed as a peace officer shall be disqualified from holding that position if his/her application for citizenship is denied.



Felony Disqualification : Pursuant to Government Code Section 1029, persons convicted of a felony are disqualified from employment as peace officers except as provided under Welfare and Institutions Code, Division 2, Chapter 3, Article 8, Section 1179(b), or Division 2.5, Chapter 1, Article 4, Section 1772(b). Except as provided for by these statutes, persons convicted of a felony are not eligible to compete for, or be appointed to, positions in these classes.



Firearm Conviction Disqualification: Anyone who is restricted for employment-related purposes from accessing, possessing, carrying, receiving, or having under his/her control a firearm or ammunition under all applicable State or Federal laws is ineligible for appointment to any position in these classifications.



Background Investigation: Pursuant to Government Code Section 1031, persons successful in peace officer examinations shall be required to undergo a thorough background investigation prior to appointment. If successful in the hiring interview, the applicant will be required to undergo a fingerprint clearance prior to appointment to this position.



Medical and Psychological Requirement: Pursuant to Government Code Section 1031, persons appointed to a peace officer class must undergo a medical and psychological examination to ensure applicant is free from any physical, emotional, or mental condition that might adversely affect the exercise of the powers of a peace officer.

  • Possession of a Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) Certificate or Completion from Basic Academy or Completion of Specialized Basic Investigators’ Certificate (SIBC).
  • Recent experience in State Service as a Investigator, conducting pension and retirement fraud; surveillance expirence, expierence conducting sensitive internal investigations, and experience with medical terminology as it relates to disability retirements.
  • The incumbent should possess a high degree of independence and good judgment, be self-motivated and able to motivate others.
