UW Medicine Strategic Marketing and Communications has an outstanding opportunity for a Director of Communications Planning to join their team. Our team is comprised of 50+ dedicated professionals who work across a variety of marketing and communications disciplines for both the health system and UW School of Medicine (SoM).

POSITION PURPOSE

The Director of Communications Planning (Director) holds a critical and supervisory role within the Strategic Communications team and is responsible for managing highly visible, large-scale communications and communications projects and initiatives for UW Medicine. This position supervises the communications planning and project management team – currently made up of the Senior Communications Project Manager and the Communications Specialist. This position requires critical thinking, sound judgement and the ability to build and maintain collaborative relationships across the UW Medicine system. The successful candidate will possess strong, hands-on organizational and project management skills and be able to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet sometimes-tight deadlines while aligning communications with UW Medicine's culture and values.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Communications Planning, Advising, Management, Execution and Evaluation - 70%: Design system-wide and entity-specific communications strategies for critical projects and initiatives. Advise leaders on effective communications planning. Develop communications plans and oversee deliverables, timing, and coordination. Ensure the accurate and on-time execution of large-scale communications projects. Continuously manage and improve upon the communications planning template. Provide crisis communications planning support. Work effectively with senior leaders and other employees to build relationships and facilitate communication. Anticipate communications needs and proactively implement solutions. Ensure alignment with overall communications strategy and organizational values. Incorporate principles of diversity, equity and inclusion in all projects. Maintain a communications planning calendar. Analyze data and provide recommendations for continuous improvement. Support and advance the mission of UW Medicine. Team Management - 30%: Manage and mentor team members. Review, edit, and provide oversight of team members’ work. Provide performance coaching and evaluation. Help onboard new team members as needed. Identify areas for improvement in team collaboration.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS

Bachelor’s degree in communications or related field. Five or more years of progressively responsible communications experience. Equivalent education/experience will substitute for all minimum qualifications except when there are legal requirements.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS

Strong leadership acumen with proven experience managing people. Experience designing and leading successful communications programs. Exceptional writing and oral communication skills. Exceptional organizational skills. Fluent understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion considerations. Ability to manage complex work while keeping concepts streamlined. Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with multiple priorities. High level of computer literacy including MS Office Suite. Willingness to work outside of typical business hours as needed. Demonstrated commitment to integrity.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Ten or more years of progressively responsible communications experience. Five or more years of experience supporting executive communications. Advanced degree in communications or related field. Prior experience in a large, complex organization. Familiarity with the AP style.
