The Health Program Specialist I (HPS I) works under the direction of the Senior Environmental Scientist Supervisor of the Community Health Education Unit within the Exposure Prevention and Education Section. The HPS I will plan and contribute to the evaluation of a variety of activities in the unit. They will help build capacity in communities affected by the social determinants of health by training community health workers and other community leaders about environmental exposures that impact them. The HPS I will provide communication and health education support to communities impacted by health inequities and environmental justice issues.

This position may be eligible for telework up to three (3) days per week and is required to report in-person to the designated headquarters office location a minimum of two (2) days per week. The amount of telework permitted is at the discretion of the Department and is subject to change, consistent with CDPH’s Telework Program. All employees who telework are required to be California residents in accordance with Government Code 14200. Candidates who reside outside of the state of California may be interviewed; however, the selected candidate must have a primary residency in the state of California prior to appointment (and continue to maintain California residency) as a condition of employment. Failure to meet this requirement may result in the job offer being rescinded.  Business travel may be required, and reimbursement considers an employee’s designated headquarters office subject to regulations and bargaining unit contract provisions. All commute expenses to the designated headquarters office will be the responsibility of the selected candidate.  The headquarters office lo cation for this position is identified in the attached duty statement.

Supplemental Questionnaire

A Supplemental Questionnaire (SQ) must be submitted in to be considered for this position. Please describe how your knowledge, education, experience, and skills have prepared you to perform the essential functions outlined in the Job Posting and Duty Statement of this position. The SQ must be typed; no more than 2-pages in length; 1.0 to 1.5 spacing; and in 12-point font. Candidates are also required to include a resume with their submission. Please note, resumes will not be accepted in lieu of the Supplemental Questionnaire.

1. Describe a time you developed a health-based training for a community-based organization. Include the types of written and verbal activities you carried out.

2. Describe how your previous work has included environmental justice and/or racial health equity.

3. Describe a time you had to work with a multi-disciplinary team to communicate scientific data to a community. Describe the educational methods and materials used.

4. Describe a time you planned a health-based program and how you evaluated the program. What was the outcome?
