Job Description

Position Summary:
The ASP Dance Activity Specialist is responsible for planning, leading, and instructing dance activities for participants in an afterschool program. This role involves creating a dynamic and inclusive environment where participants can explore various dance styles, develop their skills, and express themselves creatively. The Dance Activity Specialist ensures that all activities are age-appropriate, safe, and aligned with the program's goals of fostering physical fitness, artistic expression, and social interaction.

Key Responsibilities:

Dance Instruction:

  • Plan, develop, and lead dance classes and activities tailored to the age and skill level of participants.
  • Teach a variety of dance styles, such as ballet, hip-hop, jazz, contemporary, and cultural dances.
  • Provide clear instructions, demonstrations, and constructive feedback to help participants improve their dance skills.

Activity Planning and Implementation:

  • Design engaging dance routines and activities that encourage creativity, teamwork, and confidence.
  • Incorporate warm-ups, stretching exercises, and cool-down routines into each session.
  • Adapt activities to accommodate participants with varying levels of experience and abilities.

Participant Engagement:

  • Encourage active participation and ensure that all participants feel included and supported.
  • Foster a positive and respectful environment where participants can express themselves freely.
  • Motivate participants to set personal goals and work towards achieving them.

Safety and Supervision:

  • Ensure the safety and well-being of all participants during dance activities.
  • Monitor participants closely to prevent injuries and address any safety concerns promptly.
  • Enforce program rules and guidelines to maintain a safe and orderly environment.

Performance Preparation:

  • Organize and prepare participants for dance performances, showcases, or recitals.
  • Coordinate costumes, music, and stage setup as needed for performances.
  • Work with other staff members to plan and execute events that highlight participants' achievements.

Communication:

  • Communicate regularly with participants, parents, and staff about class schedules, upcoming events, and participant progress.
  • Provide feedback to parents and guardians regarding their child's development and participation.
  • Collaborate with other program staff to integrate dance activities into the overall afterschool curriculum.

Resource Management:

  • Manage and maintain dance-related equipment, music, and materials.
  • Ensure that all dance spaces are clean, organized, and ready for use.

Professional Development:

  • Stay updated on current dance trends, techniques, and best practices in dance education.
  • Participate in professional development opportunities to enhance instructional skills and knowledge.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent (required); associate’s or bachelor’s degree in dance, performing arts, or a related field (preferred).
  • Experience teaching dance to children or youth in a recreational or educational setting.
  • Strong knowledge of various dance styles and techniques.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to create a fun and supportive learning environment.
  • CPR and First Aid certification (preferred).

Working Conditions:

  • Must be able to work during afterschool hours, typically between 2:00 PM and 6:00 PM.
  • Ability to supervise and engage in physical activities with participants.
  • May require occasional evening or weekend hours for special events.
